Idea
With my friend Thomas , we wanted to make our firsts steps on Unreal engine together. Me with blockout, and him on blueprints. In less than a month the result is here :
Pitch
It's a gas station.
Like Rage 2, you need to destroy a certain number of gas tank, and kill all ennemies. As the game is an Open World, you can begin at multiple locations and the crane make a perfect Landmark to find this place.
We are already working on an AI and objective system to make this a fully playable Level.
I made a 2D concept of my intentions, Rage 2 locations refs, and finally a blockout with Thomas blueprints.

Jump/double jump Shoot with pistol shotgun and assault rifle
Sprint Climb(even ladders !)
Push power Black hole grenade
Actually you can:
and the hitting ground explosion power
Rage 2 refs
I took 30 at 40 screenshots at differents locations to inspire me and make my level consistent in the world. It also helped me a lot to know what to make live to the player.

2D concept
At the beginning of this project, I've came with two differents concept. One level with a gas station, and one with a local warlord and his allies.

Finally, I've mixed the two ideas to make one. But if I want to remake one, I already have refs !
I wanted to make that on a Cliff, and I wanted a giant crane, to climb on it and take the ascending in the map.

Blockout
And here's the final Blockout!
3 main entrances
5 distinct combat zone
and tons of fun creating it.
During this blockout I've only used UE4 BSP and terraformation system. I have started from no idea of how unreal works, to this little project.

There's five distinct combat zone :
-
entrance (red)
-
buildings (Yellow)
-
Crane (Blue)
-
Theater (green)
-
cliff building (violet)
You can begin from the entrance, a small passage behind the crane, or in the elevator at the cliff building
(see triangles).

Each zone has a different pacing.
The entrance has a fast paced LD, ennemies are all over the player, he can climb on tower, take cover on cas, destroy the first gas tank, and run again.

Buildings are a more linear pacing, player can easily go through a building with his shotgun and kill all in a straight line, and jump on the roof to exterminate remaining ennemies.

The theater is kind of special for me, it translate the chaos and the fun of Rage 2 universe, with a theather made of containers. it's a more vertical and slow pacing on the right side, and inside the theater, a more intensive gameplay.

The Cliff building plays a lot on verticality, you can come from the elevator and got a railshooter moment, or come from the building and go to the bottom killing everything on the multiple corridors. You can even break the gas tank chain to let it explode on ennemies downstairs.

And the crane, a lot of fun to wonder what it could be in the final game. You could activate it, make it turn, and release the two gas tanks on the theater to make everyone explode! The place itself is low paced with the intention to let the player use the assault rifle to shoot from afar ennemies. But, if you go inside the crane, the bar will be a quick but exciting killing !

And to finish, here's the props I've made. I could have done more simple, but I love to put a more "artistic" view to my LD.
