This level is about a raid in Kazan. Artyom must finds an armored train to raid the aeronautic complex.

In this level the player will
face humans factions, and watchman hordes, and obviously, radioactivity.

First, I've searched references, from "Metro 2033", but also from real subway maintenance building.

I was searching about small subway tunnels, with a lot of cover, but also gameplay moments where Horde were attacking the player.

I love this photo because it exactly represent what feeling I want the player to feel, somewhere in my level.

For the concept part, I've started with the Level pacing. Where the tension will be, player mains tasks, and the level lenght.

I also give informations like:

-Location

-Weather

-goal

Next, with 2D concepts, I've begun with a side view as you see, it help me a lot to know how my level will work.

 

I've also added real references, to illustrate my thoughts.

I've made a full walkthrough. It helps a lot to know where the player is gonna face this or this difficulty. And to present to my colleagues, it's far more enjoyable.

Here's a part I've killed. I wanted to make a side mission in this level, but I didn't know why, or what it can brings to the level. So I killed it, no reasons to keep.

Make a new side story

In the idea of creating a brand new side story, I've searched a Location In Russia, where City, and metro, were awesome.

And I found
Kazan, with a fully growing subway system. Locate next to the Volga, and with interesting military aeronautics complex.

I though it would be a
perfect place to put a DLC in.

For the first Room, I wanted trains to make guideline for the player. here's a rough preview of that.

Player can easily see where the action will be take. Each gate has a red light, except one, who has an orange one, to signify something can be made. But take care, radioactivity is high.

When approaching, a light is puton the lever, to signify it can be used.

Player must set the electricity back, but watchman are in the abandonned camp. player can use the train or the cover to go stealth

When the electricity is turn on, and the lever actionned, the light turns green, and the Gate is opened

Player faces a long tunnel, with a gate, the tension rise, and player, thanks to the poor lighting, is stressed.

When he goes deeper in the tunnel, player can see two gates, and a lever

by activating the lever, he's opening the side lane gate

When going to the new lane, player can see in the distance a ennemy camp. He can approach discretly thanks to covers. Hopefully, the radioactivity goes down

More stress, as the camp is getting longer. player always has the choice to go stealth or not.

Player can use the ennemies patrols, to go stealth, he can climb the ladder to be safe, or go crouching and make himself small

The exit is signify by a burning container, player can go stealth or not, makes himself to the next part of the level.

Directly when the player is arriving in the Maintenance Tower, player is facing a watchman horde and must go as fast as possible upstair

Player goes on the corridor and makes his way to the exit, by killing the horde

By going upstairs, player can directly see the exit. when he will arrive upstair, a watchman will throw itself on him and make a little jumpscare.

A tortuous corridor, makes the player uncomfortable, and thanks to sharp angle, making the player suspicious

Player arrives in the control room, and can see all the Maintenance room and ennemies patrol

Player must set the electricity back on, release the armored train, and open the gate.

The electricity panel is protected by some guards. player can go stealth thanks to air conditioning conduct, or train maintenance path.

When the electricity is set back on, lights are turning orange, signifying player must release the train. ot make effective, the lever he has actionned

Player release the train, which will put itself on track. Player must go in the train.

When Player is in the train, gate will open, and the last part of the level will begin

A giant horde will attack him, and player will defend the train at all costs.

Back in the subway hall, radioactivity will comeback, adding more pressure on Player

Finally, The train arrives on the dock, and player can escape this radiocative hell
